Sustainability

Ambition, measured against reality.

Our Net Zero Blueprint set out an ambitious pathway from a measured 2022 carbon baseline. Since then, we have continued to focus on the areas we can influence, support external climate action and measure our progress against the commitments we made.

2022 Scope 1, 2 & 3 emissions baseline established

Our carbon footprint

Where our emissions come from.

Our 2022 baseline established a total measured footprint of

23.4tCO₂e

2022 baseline

Scope 1
0.00 tCO₂e
No Scope 1 emissions identified in our 2022 baseline.
Scope 2
0.416 tCO₂e
Purchased electricity, heating and cooling
Scope 3
22.92 tCO₂e
Value-chain emissions: suppliers, travel, waste

97%+ of our measured emissions sit within Scope 3.

Major identified Scope 3 drivers

  • 13.62 tCO₂e Purchased materials
  • 8.3 tCO₂e Employee commuting & business travel
  • ~1 tCO₂e Waste disposal

Bar lengths show each driver as a proportion of measured Scope 3 emissions.

Our priorities

Focusing effort where it has the greatest impact.

Our 2022 baseline showed where the emissions actually sit, so effort is concentrated on the three areas with the most to gain.

01

Materials

Lower-impact materials where specification allows.

Purchased materials were the largest contributor to our 2022 footprint. We work with manufacturers, suppliers, clients and project teams to identify lower-impact coating systems and product alternatives where project specifications permit.

02

Logistics

Fewer unnecessary journeys. Better planning.

In 2022, CJ recorded 953 supplier deliveries covering 5,769 miles, generating approximately 2 tCO₂e. Our strategy identified delivery consolidation and improved logistics planning as a key opportunity for reducing Scope 3 emissions.

Future performance will be reviewed alongside business activity so that logistics efficiency can be assessed fairly as workload changes.

03

Waste & Packaging

Keeping more material in circulation.

Less than 10% of empty paint packaging was recycled in our 2022 baseline year. Since then, recovery has improved, although the original target of 80% by 2026 has not yet been achieved.

Current recovery rate under review.

Our pathway

Targets need to be measured against outcomes.

Measure 2022 baseline Original 2026 ambition Current position
Carbon footprint 23.4 tCO₂e Net zero 2026 footprint review pending Under review
Paint packaging recovery <10% ≥80% Improved, but target not yet achieved In progress
Supplier deliveries 953 deliveries / 5,769 miles 50% reduction Performance currently being reviewed Under review
Emissions measurement Baseline established Measured Updated footprint Planned before year end In progress

The next measurement matters more than the original promise.

Our original Blueprint set an ambitious target of reaching net zero by 2026. That gave the business a direction of travel, but performance should be judged by measured outcomes rather than aspiration alone.

During 2026 we are reviewing progress against that strategy and will complete an updated Scope 1, 2 and 3 footprint to set the next phase of measurable reduction targets.

Updated emissions reporting planned before year end.

Scope 3

Most of our footprint sits in our supply chain.

More than 97% of our 2022 footprint occurred within Scope 3. Meaningful reduction therefore depends on collaboration across our supply chain — particularly around materials, specification, logistics and waste.

Materials

Working with manufacturers and suppliers to identify lower-impact products and coating systems.

Logistics

Consolidating deliveries where practical and benefiting from improvements in supplier fleets.

Packaging

Increasing recovery, reuse and recycling through supplier and manufacturer schemes.

Climate action

Reduction first. Contribution alongside it.

Alongside reducing our own footprint, CJ Decorators continues to support external climate action through Ecologi.

Our approach is to prioritise reduction within our own operations and value chain, while supporting independently managed climate projects for residual and wider climate impact.

Supported through Ecologi climate projects

Figure reported on our Ecologi profile as at September 2026. This represents contribution to independently managed external climate projects — it is separate from, and not a substitute for, reductions in our own measured emissions.

Climate projects

Where our contribution goes.

Our Ecologi funding supports independently managed climate projects around the world, alongside the work we are doing to reduce our own operational and value-chain emissions.

Figures are carbon avoided through these independently managed projects, as reported by Ecologi. They are separate from reductions in our own measured emissions.
